Sophia High School: Building a More Inclusive Approach to Literacy with IDL Phonics
When Sophia High School set out to strengthen literacy support for learners with a wide range of needs, they needed more than a phonics intervention. They needed a solution that could identify literacy gaps, provide targeted support and help every learner access the curriculum with confidence.
Following a successful pilot, Katy Todd, Designated Safeguarding Lead and Additional Learning Needs Coordinator at Sophia High School, recommended IDL Phonics for wider implementation across the school.
The programme stood out for its assessment-led approach, enabling staff to identify individual literacy needs quickly and provide personalised learning pathways for every learner, including those with SEND, EAL and interrupted educational experiences.
A Whole-School Approach to Literacy
For Sophia High School, IDL Phonics was not just another intervention programme. The school recognised its potential to support wider literacy objectives by providing clear assessment data, progress tracking and targeted learning that could inform literacy support across subjects.
By giving staff greater insight into learner needs, IDL helps provide more targeted support while working towards greater confidence, independence and access to the wider curriculum.
Why Katy Recommends IDL Phonics
“Following our IDL Phonics pilot, I was confident recommending the programme for wider implementation across the school. What stood out was its ability to identify individual literacy needs and create personalised pathways for every learner.
IDL isn’t just supporting intervention sessions, it’s helping us build a more consistent and inclusive approach to literacy across the whole school. The combination of assessment, progress tracking and targeted learning makes it an invaluable tool for improving outcomes and helping pupils access the wider curriculum with greater confidence.”
