Phonics Programmes for Schools

IDL Phonics is a phonics programme for schools built around one core idea: pupils should start where they actually are, not where their age suggests they should be. We are the UK’s number one SEN app for teachers, built by a team that has worked alongside SENCOs and special educational needs experts for decades. That history shows in how the programme works. Pupils start with a placement assessment rather than an age-based level, so the same software suits a Reception class taking its first steps into blending and segmenting, a Year 8 pupil in a small SEN intervention group, and specialist SEN provision further up the school. It is aligned throughout with the UK National Curriculum and the Letters and Sounds framework.

How Our Phonics Programme Works

Every pupil begins with a placement assessment. This builds a personalised learning pathway based on real ability, not year group or age. From there, lessons are sequenced with embedded review, targeted remedial activities and real-time AI-powered speech recognition, giving pupils instant feedback as they read aloud. Progress tracking is clear and constant, so teachers and teaching assistants can see exactly where support is needed and act on it without extra paperwork.

A Phonics Programme Built for Mainstream Classrooms and Specialist SEN Provision

SEN sits at the centre of how IDL Phonics was built, not bolted on afterwards. IDL is the UK’s number one SEN app for teachers, developed with SEN experts and trusted by more than 4,200 schools worldwide, and our programmes have won the nasen Innovation Award for Technology and the National SEND Award.

IDL Phonics carries that same thinking into early reading: letter tracing, audio cues and visual prompts reinforce every lesson through more than one sense at once, which suits pupils with dyslexia and other additional needs particularly well.

Because pupils work through lessons largely independently, teaching assistants and SEN support staff are freed up to give hands-on help to whoever needs it most. Schools use IDL Phonics in mainstream primary and within specialist SEN provision, wherever a pupil needs phonics taught without simply assuming they will pick it up through repetition alone.

A Programme for Every Phonics Phase

IDL Phonics is listed among IDL’s core products for primary schools. Primary pupils can use it for foundational phonics teaching, building blending, segmenting and decoding skills through Reception and Key Stage 1 and 2.

IDL Phonics can be used as a targeted catch-up tool for pupils still working at Key Stage 1 or 2 phonics level, closing the gap before it holds back reading and writing at examination level.

Where both the primary and secondary school use IDL, a pupil’s profile can transfer between them, so phonics progress does not need to reset at the Year 6 to Year 7 transition.

Phonics Programme Pricing and the Free School Pilot

Our phonics programme for schools is priced at £599 as a standalone licence, or available as part of a bundle with other IDL programmes: £999 for two products, £1,199 for three, or £1,299 for four, with bundles including home access for pupils. Schools can currently register for a free pilot of IDL Phonics, with full access available until 1 September 2026. It is a straightforward way to trial the programme with real classes before committing to a licence.

Frequently Asked Questions - Phonics Programmes for Schools

Is IDL Phonics suitable for SEN schools and pupils with additional needs? Yes. IDL is the UK’s number one SEN app for teachers, developed with SEN experts and recognised with awards including the nasen Innovation Award for Technology and the National SEND Award. IDL Phonics applies that same multi-sensory approach, using letter tracing, audio cues and visual prompts to support pupils with dyslexia and other additional needs in mainstream classrooms and specialist SEN provision alike.

Is IDL Phonics only for primary schools? No. IDL Phonics is used in both primary and secondary schools. In secondary, it is typically used as a targeted intervention with small groups of pupils who need to strengthen decoding and reading fluency skills that were not fully secured earlier on, up to age 16+.

What age group is IDL Phonics designed for? IDL Phonics is designed for pupils aged 4 and up. It fits naturally with early phonics teaching in Reception and Key Stage 1, and is also used as a catch-up intervention for older primary and secondary pupils.

Does IDL Phonics follow the Letters and Sounds framework? Yes. IDL Phonics is fully aligned with the UK National Curriculum and the Letters and Sounds framework, so it complements rather than replaces what is already being taught in the classroom.

How much does IDL Phonics cost? IDL Phonics is available as a standalone licence for £599, or as part of a bundle with other IDL programmes starting at £999 for two products.

Can schools trial IDL Phonics before buying? Yes. IDL is currently running a free school pilot of IDL Phonics, with full access available until 1 September 2026.
