Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills, plays a crucial role in inspecting schools and assessing the quality of education they provide. A key area of focus for Ofsted SEN inspections is the provision of support for learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

When inspecting a school, Ofsted inspectors will assess how effectively leaders identify, assess and meet the needs of learners with SEN such as dyslexia and dyscalculia. They will assess the quality of dyslexia support in schools, including the provision of specialist teaching and resources. The quality of support provided to teachers in meeting the needs of SEN learners will also be assessed, in addition to the effectiveness of partnerships with external agencies, such as educational psychologists and speech and language therapists.

Ofsted inspectors will also assess how well teachers adapt their teaching to meet the needs of SEN learners, the use of effective strategies to support their progress and the quality of assessment.

Ultimately, Ofsted will look at the progress made by SEN learners, their attainment and the impact of SEN support on learners’ confidence and independence.

Key Areas of Focus for Ofsted Inspectors

Ofsted SEN inspectors will pay particular attention to how well schools identify learners with SEN, the accuracy and timeliness of assessments and the effectiveness of the school’s SEN policy and procedures. They will also assess the quality of teaching and learning for learners with SEN, the effectiveness of additional support, such as one-to-one or small-group tuition and the use of appropriate resources and equipment.

Ofsted will also consider how well schools create a positive and inclusive environment for SEN learners, the accessibility of the curriculum for those pupils and the effectiveness of strategies to promote their social and emotional development.

Tips for Schools to Improve SEN Support

To ensure that the educational support provided meets Ofsted SEN standards, schools should regularly review and update their SEN policy. All staff should have a good understanding of SEN and be well-trained to meet the needs of affected learners. Schools should work closely with parents and guardians to develop effective support plans for their children.

Additionally, schools should use a range of assessment tools to monitor the progress of learners with SEN. They should provide high-quality teaching and learning opportunities for all learners, including those with SEN. Finally, schools should create a positive and inclusive environment where all learners feel valued and supported.

By focusing on these key areas, schools can improve the quality of SEN support and ensure that all learners, regardless of their needs, have the opportunity to succeed.
