When a pupil is enrolled on IDL Numeracy, they will take a placement test to determine their starting point in the programme. The results of their test are compared against age related expectations and this information can be found in their profile. These results should not be considered a diagnostic test for learning difficulties however as that is the purpose of our screeners which we recommend new starters also undertake.

IDL Numeracy uses a range of number patterns including Chinn patterns, Numicon, domino style patterns, Cuisenaire rods and counting blocks.

The lesson structure is distributed across 11 different strands, and in each strand, there are levels 1-5 (1 being the easiest & 5 being the hardest). Each level can have anywhere from 1 to 14 learning objectives that the learner is required to meet. To achieve the learning objective, the pupil will be required to work through 10 lessons, and they will be able to achieve up to 5 stars in each lesson.

Once they achieve 40 stars in a learning objective, they will pass and move onto the next strand. – This is repeated after each learning objective, and over time, the data will reflect what the pupil excels in, and what they struggle with.

For each lesson, the pupil will earn one to five stars. The pupil will lose a star for every 2 mistakes they make until they reach 1 star. Accessing the assistant tools will also cost stars. If they achieve less than 40 stars in that learning objective, they will not have met the criteria and move on to the next strand.-

Pupils will have the opportunity to revisit the strand they are struggling with once they have worked through the other 10 strands. If they do not meet the criteria the second time around, a red marker will be visible to the teacher on their pupil profile.

Two pupils may appear to be working at the same level when reviewing their data, but the statements may be different as they are of different ages. The programme adapts the statements according to their ability and age.

Green means they have completed that learning objective by meeting the required score. Yellow means they did not successfully complete that learning objective this time around. Red means they have failed to meet the requirements of that learning objective more than once, and assistance may be required.

Entering – Pupils have been taught the skill but rarely are able to apply their understanding.

Developing – Pupils begin to apply their understanding in lessons more regularly.

Secure – Pupils are consistently working at this level.

Yes. In fact this is probably one of the most common uses of IDL Numeracy amongst our customers. Because or your pupils can work independently at their own level and pace, then you could probably have a group of 10 or more for only one facilitator.

Yes and no. IDL does not cover any topics from KS3, however, many of our Secondary schools use IDL Numeracy for those recently transitioned pupils who are behind where they need to be. This allows them to catch up more quickly than they would otherwise. Of course anyone who suffers from a disorder such a Dyscalculia would benefit from IDL Numeracy at any age.

Yes. All the lessons in IDL Numeracy have been mapped to the UK national curriculum and cover most topics in KS1 and KS2. This helps with monitoring progress against expected age related targets as well as providing a useful brush-up tool for SATs.

All pupils, whether they are new or existing, will automatically have their first baseline test scheduled for them. To retest your pupils, you will be required to manually schedule this for an upcoming date. This can be done individually or as a group.

If you wish to schedule this individually, you can find the ‘Schedule a Test’ button in the bottom right-hand corner of their pupil profile under the ‘Numeracy By Strand’ section. Scheduling a group test can be found under Progress > Numeracy By Strand > Set Group Test.

Your pupils will automatically be scheduled a baseline test upon being enrolled into Numeracy by Strand. When the pupil next accesses the program, they will take the baseline test.

The length of the test will differ for each individual pupil. They will be assessed on their ability in each of the 11 strands within the programme. In each strand, there are 5 levels, (1 being the easiest and 5 being the hardest) and each level has learning objectives the pupil will need to complete. When a pupil gets a question incorrect, they will be moved to the next strand. The process will be repeated for each strand until the test is complete.

No. The pupil can leave the test at any point and seamlessly resume the test from the same point. This offers flexibility to pupils and teachers if they need to leave.

Yes. The programme will automatically log the pupil’s results on their individual pupil profiles.

We recommend that schools test once a term having used IDL for a minimum of 1 hour per week in this time.

A controlled environment is not essential, but test conditions are preferred to reduce distraction and maximise accuracy.

From the pupils’ perspective, they will only see the word ‘learn’ and will never see the word ‘test’. As far as they’re aware, they are working through lessons in each strand. The test appears in the same way as the lessons to further this.

The programme will appear to exit the strand and go back to the ‘Numeracy by Strand’ home screen when the pupil chooses an incorrect answer within the strand. This will happen 11 times until they have worked through all the strands and completed the test.
