For many learners with dyslexia and other learning differences, confidence can be one of the biggest barriers to progress. When reading, spelling or numeracy feels difficult day after day, learners may begin to doubt their abilities and disengage from learning altogether. At IDL, we see time and again that building confidence is just as important as building skills, with independent learning playing a powerful role in making that happen.

Across schools using IDL software, a common theme emerges: when learners are given the right tools to work independently, confidence grows, progress accelerates and attitudes to learning begin to change.

Why independence matters for learner confidence

Independent learning gives learners a sense of ownership. Instead of relying on adult support, they are able to practise skills at their own pace, revisit concepts when needed and experience success on their own terms.

For dyslexic learners in particular, this independence is crucial. IDL’s structured, multisensory approach removes much of the pressure associated with traditional literacy tasks. Learners can focus on learning rather than worrying about getting things wrong in front of others. Immediate feedback and clear progression help them recognise their own improvement, reinforcing a positive cycle of effort and achievement.

Success stories from classrooms using IDL

Evidence from a range of school pilots and independent research highlights the positive impact of IDL on learner progress and confidence. In a ten‑week pilot involving 20 schools across Birmingham, 64 % of pupils made accelerated progress in phonics, 74 % in reading comprehension and 57 % in spelling, demonstrating substantial literacy gains in a relatively short period of use.

In a follow‑up numeracy pilot with 14 Birmingham primary and secondary schools, 65 % of pupils showed accelerated progress in addition and 66 % in number and place value, with 64 % of learners identified as requiring SEN support making accelerated progress across key numeracy strands.

Longer‑term research across nearly 97,000 performance records further supports these programme effects: analysis shows that just one IDL session is associated with measurable improvements in reading and spelling, with gains equivalent to approximately 1.9 days in reading and 1.8 days in spelling for each lesson completed.

These outcomes are reflected in practice, with educators reporting that pupils who previously struggled to engage with literacy and numeracy become more confident, motivated to work independently and eager to demonstrate their progress. Across contexts, learners make meaningful gains while building self‑belief and resilience, reinforcing the value of IDL as part of a robust intervention strategy.

Confidence that transfers beyond the intervention

The confidence built through independent learning with IDL doesn’t stay within the programme. Schools frequently report improvements in classroom participation, written work and overall engagement. Learners who once avoided reading aloud or writing tasks are more willing to contribute, ask questions and take pride in their work.

This confidence transfer is key to long-term success. As learners begin to understand how they learn best, they develop strategies they can use across subjects and throughout their education. Independent learning becomes a skill in itself, one that supports resilience, motivation and lifelong learning.

Supporting schools every step of the way

IDL is designed to support both learners and educators. Clear progress tracking allows staff to monitor impact, celebrate success and make informed decisions about next steps. Because learners can work independently, staff time is used more effectively, while still ensuring that support is targeted and meaningful.

Whether used as part of early intervention, catch-up support or ongoing SEN provision, IDL helps schools create an environment where learners feel capable, supported and confident.

For many dyslexic learners, difficulties with reading, spelling and writing are noticed early, but support does not always arrive early enough.

When dyslexia is identified and addressed at an early stage, learners are far more likely to develop strong literacy foundations, confidence in their abilities and a positive relationship with learning that lasts throughout their education. 📚
