William’s Story: Finding His Words

“My name is William and I’m 9 years old. I go to Moorside Primary School — although I would prefer to go to Hogwarts! My favourite books are the Skandar series and my dream is to become a writer.

I started doing IDL at school every day to improve my reading and spelling. I used IDL in the morning at school every day for about 20 minutes. At first, I didn’t know it was helping but then an improvement happened and my reading and writing got a lot better.

Now I feel a lot more confident and I’m proud that people can read my stories. I even asked for a dictionary for Christmas because I like learning new words! I think IDL is very helpful for children who struggle to keep on top of their literacy.”

The Overall Impact of IDL

IDL did not “remove” dyslexia. Instead, it provided the structured support needed to reduce cognitive strain, allowing William’s creativity, intelligence and passion for language to flourish.

Most importantly, it transformed literacy from a source of distress into a platform for expression and success.

The impact can be seen across several areas:

  • Improved spelling accuracy
  • Age-expected attainment by Year 3
  • Greater independence in writing
  • Increased confidence and self-belief
  • Pride in personal achievement

IDL helped turn reading and writing from something that frustrated William into something he feels confident and excited about, giving him the tools to share the creativity and love of stories he’d had all along.

Now I feel a lot more confident and I’m proud that people can read my stories.
