Building Confidence Through Independent Learning: Success Stories From IDL Users

Success stories from classrooms using IDL

Evidence from a range of school pilots and independent research highlights the positive impact of IDL on learner progress and confidence. In a ten‑week pilot involving 20 schools across Birmingham, 64 % of pupils made accelerated progress in phonics, 74 % in reading comprehension and 57 % in spelling, demonstrating substantial literacy gains in a relatively short period of use.

In a follow‑up numeracy pilot with 14 Birmingham primary and secondary schools, 65 % of pupils showed accelerated progress in addition and 66 % in number and place value, with 64 % of learners identified as requiring SEN support making accelerated progress across key numeracy strands.

Longer‑term research across nearly 97,000 performance records further supports these programme effects: analysis shows that just one IDL session is associated with measurable improvements in reading and spelling, with gains equivalent to approximately 1.9 days in reading and 1.8 days in spelling for each lesson completed.

These outcomes are reflected in practice, with educators reporting that pupils who previously struggled to engage with literacy and numeracy become more confident, motivated to work independently and eager to demonstrate their progress. Across contexts, learners make meaningful gains while building self‑belief and resilience, reinforcing the value of IDL as part of a robust intervention strategy.

Confidence that transfers beyond the intervention

The confidence built through independent learning with IDL doesn’t stay within the programme. Schools frequently report improvements in classroom participation, written work and overall engagement. Learners who once avoided reading aloud or writing tasks are more willing to contribute, ask questions and take pride in their work.

This confidence transfer is key to long-term success. As learners begin to understand how they learn best, they develop strategies they can use across subjects and throughout their education. Independent learning becomes a skill in itself, one that supports resilience, motivation and lifelong learning.
